Talk about Linux, macOS, Windows, maybe TempleOS?

DEs and WMs Opinions and Experiances

Post by Crazyroostereye »

I am Interested in hearing peoples opinion and experience with DEs and WMs.

I'll Start. I have been at this point a long time Hyprland and before that I3 User. Having used WMs the majority of the time I have been using Linux. It feels more Productive at least being able to open everything I regularly need with a simple Key Combination I have dictated myself. And really less on the Mouse. I really can't speak on I3 as it has been a long time since I have used it last, but as I remember it was a great WM to get used to the concepts of WMs. Hyprland is in my eyes a good Continuation of it in the Wayland space, while being and Auto-Tiler unlike I3 I have had a great experience with it.
Lately I have been also trying out niri which is a Scrolling tiler which opens its windows beyond your screen any you can sideways scroll to them. I think it's an Interesting Idea and has been treating me well in the past few Days I have been trying it.

So what's your Experience been with your Desktop or WM. And what strong opinion do you carry about a Desktop or WM

This is something I can ship in a response for! :D

My journey as been rather chaotic on the desktop guide (constantly switching between KDE and XFCE for a year, I think I even used GNOME at one point)

But within this past year I have tried i3, which I greatly enjoyed. And then, I ended up moving over to sway which I've been having a blast with (Feels like home!)

Sway is a drop-in replacement for i3 (for use on wayland), and I've enjoyed working on getting my keybinds exactly how I enjoy them

(It's rather interesting to see how you're experience has gone!)
You should have a cup of tea today!
But I hope your day is great no matter what <3

I have used KDE and Gnome, not so much XFCE tho usually more in a Lightweight environment kind of circumstance. While KDE is nowadays my Preferred DE. Gnome before my Switch to WMs was my Default. In large part of the Gnomic style of Workspaces, which I also really enjoy in Niri atm. What I mean with that is that there aren't hard named Workspaces. They are always Dynamic. Meaning there is always the ones with content +1. And the Key binds order themselves accordingly.

I also know of Sway, used it a very short while when switching into Wayland Land, but I quickly switch over to Hyprland because of the Auto Tiler. And stayed for the Animations :D

I do get that, but you can Install it Parallel to Sway, you then get the option to switch between them in your Display Manager. Most of the Tooling your going to need most likely the same as in Sway anyways. But yeah I get that

I'm actually actively contributing to niri right now! Absolutely love the thing! Its a bit immature but you can totally daily drive the thing with no problems whatsoever.

I used to use hyprland but left when I saw the whole freedesktop situation with the lead dev. Super icky stuff; just can't get behind that kind of behavior. Solid WM though!

Sway is my current low overhead option & general xwayland test bench when I'm trying to debug something on xwayland satellite.

I heard about it. I hate Software Project Communities, there are many great out there but good god I just like the Software, please don't make me automatically subscribe to your Ideology just for using it.

But in general the Hyprland Incident seemed to me as a Edgy Humour making fun of Pronouns thing. Definitely Improper and deservedly Criticised, as I think the Dev doesn't know the Scale of his Project and the expected Professionalism that goes with it. But more of a Joke that went wrong, then actual I'll content.

Tho please Correct me if I am wrong, the last news I kept up with was, the Pronoun thing of renaming a Person in the Discord rudely resulting to the kick out in the Wayland Project. In very short.

I have my current linux install setup around a foundation of sticks XD
I'd need to change critical files to not boot hyprland
(That gentoo install looks more appealing by the day  )

That's sweet! Sway, Niri, Hyprland. Honestly all of them are cool >>
What have you contributed to Niri?

Wait what have you setup to boot directly into hyprland or whatever, normaly you should have your Diplay Manager, the thing that handles your login (SDDM, GDM, greetd, etc...) which should show all the Properly Installed WMs and DEs in a selection box or similar.

Also gentoo install, do you have a week of free time to compile your Browser? /Joking

No worries, just delete the part you don't want to quote out of the quote. It still will correctly quote it from the other Post.
