I recently discovered Lost City, a preservation project for the 2004 version of the classic MMORPG RuneScape. The server has been reimplemented and released as free (open source) software. 2004 is the year I started playing RuneScape back in the day, so this has been very exciting and nostalgic for me.
There is only one major issue I've found so far: due to some unfortunate incidents with account security, the admin/lead dev decided to require new users to register using a Discord account. I opened a thread on their forum to complain and request to be able to sign up without Discord and was instructed to reach out to the admin, which I did, and who did set me up with a legacy account as requested. Still, I think this process is quite less than ideal, so if you care about this I'd encourage you to join the forum and make it known (but don't be annoying please).
I would also encourage those interested to make a local mirror of the source code in case Jagex decides that this project competes too greatly with Old School RuneScape and starts taking legal action to bring it offline. Jagex seems not to be very hostile to these sorts of preservation projects, but I recall a 2007scape server being taken offline around the time that OSRS was launched.
Otherwise, if this sounds fun and you decide to sign up, feel free to add me! My in-game name is Jimothy.
