In Search of a Dumbphone

Post by Crazyroostereye »

I am going on holiday for a few weeks soon, and as I dont have any Cellular anyway on my Phone, I had the Idea of using a Dumbphone for the duration as trial run, to see if I can do that. Sadly I don't have any old phone lying around any more. And am searching to buy some. Sadly most ones I can find are these typical senior phone that are a bit Pricy and big for my taste.
Do you guys have any suggestions of Dumbphone that is the best case less than 50€ and not to big?

Last time I looked, I was considering the Nokia 225 4G. If you can find one, they're reasonably cheap. Good luck in your search!

Update, I bought myself the Nokia 225 4G in a nice Hot Pink :D As it was 40% Cheaper than the Blue Version. It hasn't arrived yet tho. I will report back once I got it

Please report back!! I've been on a flip phone kick for a few years now, but sometimes there aren't many modern options out there for flippies, or the newer builds feel flimsy, so the "brick" design seems attractive because it seems like you could throw it around. ISO something "adventure ready" :D

I bought the Cat S22 for the robustness and like it very much for that, but its not perfect by any means so am open to options!

So yeah HMD, the ones I bought it from, cancelled my Order so it never arrived. So I had to use my Smartphone for my Holiday. But while on Holiday my Aunt told me that they get a lot of Phones, especially Flip Phones for Recycling, from her Work and she offered to bring me a selection. I picked one out, a Kyocera S2720 unlocked Verizon varient, While it is defiantly on the Cheap side and I haven't Daily driven it yet. I am going to try it out soon.

The Kyocera series are quite nice! During my undergrad and early postgrad years in the US, I used one, as I mention in my introduction. The size, durability and capacity to tether have made it the most powerful feature phone without any needless SNS integration or ability to download applications I have ever witnessed. I honestly preferred it over the Nokia 105 which I got on returning to this country, and hearing that Verizon’s Kyoceras can be made to work here is rather encouraging. I might look into unlocking my old US American mobile if I ever need one again.

I recently ordered a Nokia 2720 4G on Vinted for just 16€, which I think is a great deal!
It's been working really well so far. It runs on KaiOS, which makes the experience a bit more comfortable compared to a classic dumbphone, you still get access to some useful features like Maps, basic web browsing, and more, without falling back into full smartphone habits.
If you’re looking for something compact and functional on a budget, I’d definitely recommend it. ;) ;)

So here is my Update, So the Kyocera stopped working after I did a full reset on it via the Androids reset method. Which also has disabled the SIM Unlock. And as everything I read on unlocking them again, it will be Impossible as I am not in the US any more nor have access to an American Phone Number. Also, other Gripes I hade with the Phone, primarily its language Options being English and Spanish only and its Phone Number Input defaulting to the American - type of Phone Style putting me off too. Tho I do really like the feel of the Phone, which really Disappoints me.

So I decided to buy a new Phone instead which is the Nokia 3310, which I dont recommend for other reason later. Its actually the Phone I initially order from HMD which got cancelled. And it has been treating me well, tho there are Issues. In general in my Journey to go to Dumb Phone. My only major hang up has been E-Scooters. While I rarely use them, they do come in Handy on special occasions. But besides that the reason also cannot recommend this phone is that it relays on 2G/GSM Networking. Which is shut down in many Countries. And will be shut down in Germany by at least by one major Company in 2028. So long term this phone might be my Companion for the Next 3 Years. Or might not be. However, I feel.

Also side note, learn about the security about 2G as it is vastly insecure and you should only use it if you understand the risks.
