What do folks around here think about Techlore?

Post by seasnails »

For a few years now I've really enjoyed Techlore (https://www.techlore.tech/), particularly their video recommendations on privacy-respecting software and services, and their outlining of threat models that they recommend individuals come up with to decide how much they're willing to sacrifice for the sake of increased privacy/security, and how that can be different for everyone. Similar to to the Window of Tolerance in Reject Convenience's latest video.

However, I can't help but feel like sometimes there's something I can't really explain, sort of a "vibe" that feels a little weird with Techlore stuff. I wish I could explain what it is that's making me feel slightly wary. There's nothing I can point to and say "this specific thing strikes me as a little weird." So, I figured I'd come here and see how other people felt about Techlore.

Again: I really like Techlore, and I put a lot of trust in their recommendations. I appreciate all the effort they put into researching and packaging information into videos to share their findings and provide multiple options for people, rather than just feeling like they're essentially pushing or sponsoring a single preferred product all the time. I especially appreciate that they'll still critique things they've recommended in the past; they seem to be acting fairly, and adjusting their own opinions and recommendations based on how things continue to develop.

I can kinda see what you mean just idly browsing their website. Not a massive fan of their video title phrasing but it's to get clicks, what can I say :|
Cool to see that they have a forum though, but... yeah I get a weird feeling too? I dunno, it still feels very opiniony and like strangely corporate to me? Might be the rounded style that companies use these days. That and the whole membership/tutoring thing they've got going on.
I did watch their Linux Distro tierlist video, it sounded pretty informative but even so, weird gut feeling all the same.

Don't know what to make of it as a Linux beginner, but all I'll say is listen to your feelings, they might be trying to say something.
"the only thing i was looking for... was a new beginning."
