Practice drawing big cats

Post by Felid131 »

Hello. This is my first time posting here. I've been off and on practicing drawing for the past few years. Of interest is big cats. Here's a Snep I did in my notebook. What I did is go to Random Big Cat Generator and look up pictures of the species it said, pick one I like, and then draw it. I'm hoping to continue drawing more, get better, and post my work here.

Oh! Is that a snow leopard? I love how shaggy it is. Random (wild?) cat generator is a great idea for drawing prompts.

Somewhat related, this humourous video on your life as a snow leopard might interest you.

Quick and dirty one. Wish I could erase pen. I kept adding to the mouth trying to fix it and made a mess of it. Thin-furred cats are not my thing and not very enjoyable to draw. The boney skull translated poorly to a sketch and looks quite ugly.

That’s pretty cool! The North American cougar, huh? It’s good that you’re challenging yourself to draw things outside your comfort zone, you’ll learn quicker from those mistakes than from any other. When you think of a big cat’s head, what helps me is thinking about how the muscles spread out from the bony ridge, almost like a pair of wings on each side.

I tried giving it a go and misjudged how much room I had left on my page, ha. I messed up its left eye trying to shade it like in the photo, and I had a little trouble judging the jowl, but overall I like how it turned out. The musculature in the front leg is very prominent and that struck me particularly.

Holy cow that's amazing JINSBEK! I can tell you've got much more art experience, knowing where to prioritize effort and detail and how to translate the parts of a real picture to drawing form.
