I want to start an openSUSE hype train. I installed the tumbleweed version, and I am now a huge fan. The package manager seems to require the terminal, but it is pretty nice. Rolling release like arch, but also stable.

The only time I used openSUSE was when I worked at Lowes. (I liked it.)

What did you use it for? I think the POS I used when I worked retail had suse on it. I am still rocking openSuse which is weird. I'd thought I would have hopped off it for arch or pop!_OS but I haven't yet.

Honestly Ubuntu is a great option. The Linux that works for you is the best Linux, that's what I say!

honestly that's so true- as a total Linux noob I need something familiar to work with that's not entirely gonna throw me in the deep end, as I'm coming off Windows for the last... well basically forever! I should try Ubuntu eventually, I've been messing with Mint on a live USB to get the feel of things but haven't made the jump due to storage stuff atm.

But I agree, if it works for you then it works. I don't think it's more like morally pure to just work in terminal or just work with a desktop interface, it's *your computer* at the end of the day. you use it how you like

I worked there as a cashier. The POS system and the employee computers (used for training and clocking in) used openSUSE. They booted fast and didn't have any issues, it was great.

I started using Linux (around end of 2023 beginning of 2024 ) with Pop_OS, and even with the difficulties of someone who has only used Windows all their life, it wasn't hard to get used to the new workflow. Pop_OS was awesome and met everything I needed :D

When I started to get more comfortable and experiment with window managers it seemed more convenient to migrate to Arch (middle to end of 2024), where I could find the packages I wanted more easily. The installation script gave me a good basis for what I needed from the system without the scary parts of the manual one, and for now I'm using Hyprland with Gnome DE as fallback and it's been great.

like @rose_buddy, I also haven't had any problems so my opinion may change in a few updates haha

Okay Garuda has wobbly windows on by default, so I have switched and will be trying it out for a couple weeks. I love wobbly windows.

Without reading further so it may have been addressed but gnome does have wobbly windows, burning windows, and other compiz fusion eye candies. Search in the "Pop shop??" , I think thats what its called, for "Extension Manager"

I so badly want to know if a steam deck would work as a portable animation tool for my Blender workflow (but I also know that I should just get a laptop). But it would be really interesting to know. I don't play games often, so it'd be a basic Blender computer lol.

You should check out sunshine/moonlight. It allows for a more powerful machine to act like a server and do the heavy lifting while using another weaker device like a steamdeck as a thinclient. The technology started off as geforce now but the community picked it up when it was abandoned.

Firstly, welcome, @rejectsocietynorms! Also, I know it's a meme, but I had a realization the other day - why does arch have such a devout fanbase? It is more stable? Is it more customizable? Like what's the big catch? I'm really curious as I've never actually thought about it before.

To my knowledge its because its an achievement. Just like the attachment of those who built their computers or built their own server or built a kitchen table. It may not be the best, most shiny, most glamorous OS out there.... but its has a charm all its own.

Ubuntu is underrated.

While all the Statements about Ubuntu are True, Ubuntu is still not underrated.
It is quite Literally the King of the Linux Desktop. It is the most Commonly used Linux Distro.

I love Ubuntu. When I build out a home lab/server for friends I would default to Ubuntu. Canonical on the other hand.....
