Fighting facial recognition

Post by Pearlple »

Quite a while back I saw some kind of video where someone was using a hat with some sort of IR emitter built into it (might have been fiction) and since then this idea has kept coming up in the back of my head.
With facial recognition and cameras everywhere becoming more normalised and more and more companies and goverment bodies at least interested, if not investing in the 'digital panopticon', I have been thinking about this idea more and more.

So I would like to invite you to discuss how feasible something like this is to build into for example a pair of glasses (basically anti-AR glasses) and how realistic it is this might actually work.
Could a small battery powered IR emitter even be strong enough to create a blinding glare that a camera or at least the facial recognition software behind it could not handle. Are modern cameras even 'dumb' enough to not be able to filter out the IR light.
And the further considerations; just like fingerprinting this method of 'anonymising' yourself comes with the issue that if you are the only one doing it, it won't help much. It might help you avoid being automatically tagged on some social media, but for anyone looking for you it would act more as a beacon. So to make anything like this work properly it would need a sort of movement and lots of people who saw value in it to support the cause.
If I ever built anything like this, I would make how I built it publicly available and depending on how it's done, share 3D printing templates and such. But this approach would once again only help tech-interested people who are already within this sort of bubble.

These are just some of the thoughts around this that have been flying through my head for a while and I just needed to put them somewhere.
