IRC

I know we have the chat function in this forum, but the nerdier (and/or older) among us still use Internet Relay Chat (IRC) for our real-time chat channels. It's a delightfully simple protocol that's as old as the internet.
What do we think about having an official IRC channel? The main barrier to IRC for most users is setting up a client (IRC is decentralized, so you need to configure your client to connect to the right network), and moderators will need to do a bit of reading to understand the esoteric channel mode codes. I suppose the real barrier might be that of stretching John Rejectconvenience (has he revealed his name yet? I don't remember) too thin across multiple forums.
If there's interest, I'm willing to help out. I've been moderating a social channel for several years now. I'm also content to just keep using the forum, but if this community ever starts using Discord I will be very disappointed.
