Eddie Burback - I hate my phone so I got rid of it

Post by PossiblyAxolotl »

Eddie Burback released a new video getting rid of his iPhone for 30 days I really liked so I thought I’d share here: https://youtu.be/nnsyGSTKlw0

I’m especially surprised by how he didn’t switch to a dumb phone, but exclusively a landline and I was curious what you all thought about the video
-Axolotl, of the possible variety
that doesn't make sense. Who wrote that?

I could always use more Eddie Burback in my life, I also thought about doing something like this at the start of the year but ultimately I couldn't bring myself to do it, so I ended up only blocking all of the social media apps (not only on my phone but on all of my devices) and ended the month feeling pretty similar to Eddie but without the negatives of just not having access to an insanely versatile tool (I was able to level a picture frame without busting out the laser level and also had a flashlight on me when we had a power outage).

But I am very pleasantly surprised by how well Eddie's challenge went with no mobile phone at all, especially in such a big city, I might have to give this a shot myself to see how it differs from only being away from social media as I was still receiving some notifications from things like emails and text messages.

For anyone reading this, if stowing away your phone entirely fells like too much (like it felt for me) I still highly recommend that you go a couple of weeks at least with as little (see none) social media, at the start it will be hard, and you will be bored but it might let you re-evaluate what you really want and need, I know it made me feel better, and dare I say even a bit happier.

I want to end this by just quoting Eddie, from that very same video, because I really liked how he put it into words:
It's up to you to rip yourself back into reality as much as you can and take back what is rightfully yours, You.

This video really impacted me and makes me want to remove more of my addictions. Namely, Reddit and YouTube. I need to pull the plug on my addiction to those sites.

I feel that his test might be too extreme for me, with the lack of directions and all, but I also really want to try it. It sounds like a breath of fresh air.

Thank you for sharing this amazing video.

If landlines weren't so unreasonably expensive to run month to month (it's like $60/month in my area, it's bonkers), I'd probably go this route. I loved the video, though, it really highlighted the importance of trying something different. I agree, though, most folks can't probably go as extreme as he did, which is why I talk about sustainable changes so much, but still, I think this video will inspire many to seek out other options. It's funny, my dumb phone videos have been getting searched for a lot recently, and I suspect it's because of this video, so that's cool.

I really want to switch to a Dumb phone eventually, but I need access to services like Signal and WhatsApp, and I am not comfortable migrating to SMS given their Security Issues. Also Dumb phones are unreasonably expensive I have noticed. Like I am not paying 60€ for a Phone that only can do Calls and maybe SMS.

That's Insane I got one with my Standard Home Internet Plan Included. I mostly use it to do Fax stuff, as this is easier and faster than Snail Mail, and E-Mail hasn't been Invented yet at the Government.
