hello!
Hey guys, some of you might know me from the Melonland Forum. I caame here because i wanna stop using my phone so much and also because I have nothing else to do. which is why I use my phone so much in the first place. I just really cant imagine doing anything without it because there's no other thing to occupy that space. I tried to get this Sharp contact manager/note writer/whatever 10kb thing to work but its busted. Probably because I couldnt open it and i resorted to flushing it with alcohol hoping it would fix the broken LEDs. Dont tell anyone that. Anyways I really wish that physical non-phoneicular stuff was the norm but Ive lost my passion for the hobby because every news article says how vinyl records are dying and dvds are dying and how everything is dying and how soon you'll only be able to watch movies or probably do anything thru some stupid streaming service with a cheesy name like "Shmisney Shmus" or "Company Name Additive/Multiplicative Symbol" or "Some random made up 4 letter word like 'Smob'." I really dont likke how we dont have no broadcast tv, no good public radio, people only wanna watch movies on crappy streaming services, and everytime you do something against that fold, they gotta harass you about it! Or just reminisce fondly. Its always a tossup between those 2. But extra anyways, Im just scared all this wholesome stuff we had back then is gonna go away and be replaced with utter crapfulness. Im not saying enshittification because I hate buzzwords. Hate em. But i really think we need some kinda united task force to help propogate these more wholesome technologies. Anyways, thats my intro. Hope you like me being around here. Im gonna go back to BBSing or watching hormstor ronnor. Cheers
Re: hello!
I think the important consequence of putting away your phone is becoming bored. Bored is not an ideal state to be in, but it is the state you need to be in to come up with new ideas. When you are bored, your mind will wander for anything you could be up to. You will think about friends and relationships and ways you could improve yourself, and hopefully you will also think of better things to occupy your time with. Hobbies are important. Sit and be bored for a little while and try to think about the person you want to become. How does that person spend their time?
Maybe you'll get inspiration to write a story, or practice music, or build a cool gadget, or ride a bike. "Not having a smartphone" is not a hobby. That's just not participating in the machine. It's not enough to just reject the mainstream; you need to replace it with your own genuine interests. And if your friends mock you for your interests, maybe they aren't good friends.

Re: hello!
Firstly, welcome! Glad to have you here
I believe in you!!
Also sorry for the wall of text I just drank a cup of coffee, which I normally do not drink, and I am W I R E D icanseethroughtime!

Do it anyways! Buy used DVDs and CDs and records! Don't let anyone tell you how to enjoy things! So what if they break in like 30 years? That's a 30-years-from-now-you problem, enjoy what you want to enjoy now!Diffaaaay wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 9:49 pm Anyways I really wish that physical non-phoneicular stuff was the norm but Ive lost my passion for the hobby because every news article says how vinyl records are dying and dvds are dying and how everything is dying and how soon you'll only be able to watch movies or probably do anything thru some stupid streaming service with a cheesy name like "Shmisney Shmus" or "Company Name Additive/Multiplicative Symbol" or "Some random made up 4 letter word like 'Smob'."
The reason this forum exists is because I figured out that you can be the change you want to see. There are some fantastic ways to make changes like this, but it takes a lot of time and effort. A wonderful example is the guys over at https://youaremachines.com/. They made a free online radio station, and it's awesome. They've been expanding and having lots of fun with it, and my point here is that anyone can do anything if you just put your mind to itDiffaaaay wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 9:49 pm I really dont likke how we dont have no broadcast tv, no good public radio, people only wanna watch movies on crappy streaming services, and everytime you do something against that fold, they gotta harass you about it!

Re: hello!
The feeling of grabbing a physical piece of media and putting it in a physical machine to play it is something special that nothing fully digital has ever been able to replicate for me, even taking a disc of a game (that I own digitally on PC) and slot into an old console puts a huge smile on my face.rejectconvenience wrote: Fri Apr 11, 2025 3:28 pm Do it anyways! (side note, why is almost all good quality audio stuff so expensive? I just wanted to enjoy the few vinyl records that I own without destroying them)
I fully agree with "enjoy what you want to enjoy now!", also welcome to the forum Diffaaaay! I have seen you around Melonland before

I have seen a System a While back where you use Cartridges that you have to Physically put in a Machine to play Audio Books. The Cartridges are just glorified USB Sticks in actuality, but that's one way to add Physicality with current Tech. Still its Flash Storage, which will die on you when you least expect it.
In my recommendation buy Physical Media, Rip it so you have a backup, maybe even burn it on a New Disk when the old one Dies. Check beforehand tho if its legal in your area. We here in Germany have luckily the Private Copy law which allows us to rip Media as longs that we don't redistribute.

They are still around in most places, you just have to look for them. Sometimes it takes a bit of Searching but they are there.Diffaaaay wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 9:49 pm I really dont likke how we dont have no broadcast tv, no good public radio, people only wanna watch movies on crappy streaming services, and everytime you do something against that fold, they gotta harass you about it!
