IRC

Post by zonk »

I know we have the chat function in this forum, but the nerdier (and/or older) among us still use Internet Relay Chat (IRC) for our real-time chat channels. It's a delightfully simple protocol that's as old as the internet.

What do we think about having an official IRC channel? The main barrier to IRC for most users is setting up a client (IRC is decentralized, so you need to configure your client to connect to the right network), and moderators will need to do a bit of reading to understand the esoteric channel mode codes. I suppose the real barrier might be that of stretching John Rejectconvenience (has he revealed his name yet? I don't remember) too thin across multiple forums.

If there's interest, I'm willing to help out. I've been moderating a social channel for several years now. I'm also content to just keep using the forum, but if this community ever starts using Discord I will be very disappointed. :ugeek:

I also find it is a Good Idea, as mChat is cool the Issue is when are People Online Parallel and when do they notice that there has been a Message. Because my Browser Unloads this Site if not used and therefor I don't get the Ping.

The Question what Network would be optimal, I only know really Libera Chat and hackint personally, but I don't know if they are a Good fit.

I would be in favor of an IRC channel. An XMPP chat would also suffice.

It's more working a full time job and also making YouTube videos in my free time lol. I'm pretty sure I've said my name is Anthony, but I also go by Walter Hartwell White, I live at 308 Negra Arroyo Lane, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87104

(anyways, I would love some guidance from y'all on this suggestion, it's a little above what I think I'm able to pull off right now)

(also there has not, nor will there ever be a Reject Convenience Discord server. I don't like that I have a Discord account in general, as I don't love their privacy policy, and I will not force people to use a platform for community engagement that relies on them agreeing to something I do not agree with myself.)
Be kind and patient with each other!

IRC as far as I understand it myself is If the Network allows it you can create the Channel in the Network by just Joining it and then depending on the Network you can Register it to make it Persistent or not. But I am not that well versed in it to give a definitive answer. Also while the / command aproch is cool, it is sorta unintuitive to use if you dont know it :) .

Furthermore, as I looked more into it is we need to find a Network first, that allows the Type of Chat that we want.
The only one in this realm I know is hackint.org.
With the Policy
You are welcome to create any kind of channel, as long as it does not violate German or Dutch law.

Rizon would be another one to consider. I'm biased slightly toward it because I already connect to that network for another channel.

Same reason I'm biased toward hackint.

But I just looked into both of the Networks and find booth good choices, but I still prefer hackint over Rizon for the following reasons:
- Personal Bias (I already connect to hackint)
- The CCC trusts the Network for many of its regional delegations (sorta Personal Bias)
- Located in the EU (Dutch/Germany), meaning has to abide to DSGVO/GDPR.

These reasons are not dealbreakers for me, I will join either One of them for the RJC channel. Theses are just my reasons why I would prefer hackint over Rizon. I would love to here your Reasons for Rizon or other Networks, as I am still open for Discussion!

Alright since there hasn't been any movement on this for 2 weeks I decided to just make one myself.

Feel free to join me in #inconvenient on Rizon (#rejectconvenience would be a rather long channel name and I thought this one was funnier). If @rejectconvenience decides to join, I can give operator powers and/or transfer channel ownership. My username is Zerock.
