Re: Alternatives to D&D
I played Call of Cuthulu just yesterday. It's pretty fun. It's a lot more focused on mystery solving then combat.
Re: Alternatives to D&D
At last, my childhood tendency to collect generic RPG rulebooks when I could find nobody to play with me proves useful.
To date, I have refereed one RPG ruleset: Forgotten Futures. The rules are designed mostly for scenarios set in Victorian through interbellum times, whether fantasy, steampunk or mundane, but they are quite flexible in principle. The author himself has adapted the rules to suit Flatland, which is what first attracted me to them. It is designed to use only d6.
Other generic rulebooks in my collection and freely available online include FUDGE, the diceless Active Exploits and the rather silly Risus.

Autistic and atavistic. Ash is the best letter.

Re: Alternatives to D&D
Just saw this thread! We're necroing again baby because holy hell I love these little things and you can do a hell of a lot better than 5e! In no particular order here are some awesome options:
Blades in the dark
Cyberpunk Red
Spire
Heart
Lancer
Monsterhearts 2, thirsty sword lesbians, other assorted PBTA systems
SLUGBLASTER
Delta Green
Mothership
The Wildsea
Lichcraft
Vampire The Masquerade
Mythic Bastionland
Edge of the Empire (or any other genesys based system- that dice system is cooking with gas)
Find a system that is made to tell the kind of stories you and your group want to tell. There is so much beautiful stuff out there, its a damn shame that so many people don't venture past 5e. And share what you find; everyone's always learning!

Re: Alternatives to D&D
Let me just add some to consider to the list:
Swords & Wizardy (OSR offshoot of original D&D 1.0)
Daggerheart (modern spiritual successor to D&D)
Electric Bastionland (a more Steampunk-ish variant to Mythic Bastionland)
Between Clouds (Biopunk)
Goblin Errands (cutesy and low stakes fun)
Hack the Planet (Cyberpunk adaptation of Blades in the dark)
Dolmenwood (OSR)
Lady Blackbird
