Hi All! I'm Sam, a professional environmental scientist and amateur jazz pianist who is trying to get back in touch with the fun internet, outside the big websites. Reject Convenience's videos really spoke to me, so I'm hoping to share more of what I love online while checking out all the cool stuff that other people love!

TL;DR: I’m KisanoWasTaken, and I am a boy who wants to feel alive

I’ve been putting this off way too long, due to me trying to think of the best way to make a good impression, because I’m scared of being rejected from this community for saying something wrong, but to be honest, it’s better try and lose a game, rather than never knowing if you’re good enough so…hey. :?

Who are you?
Name’s KisanoWasTaken and I do a lot of things. I’m a boy of many interests, especially loving rhythm games, niche computer nerd things and above all, Jesus Christ. I’m based in the British Isles, and wish to not elaborate too much further than that. Also, I’m a minor (13 < x < 18), so watch out. Also, I rarely ever am on forums, so if there’s any forums etiquette that’s associated with this kind of place, please let me know. Also, dogs and ferrets are cool and you won’t change my mind. 8-)

Why are you here?
To be honest, with the ongoing corporatism and ens***tification of the internet, I felt…empty. Every interaction was focused on “how do I get people to like my posts so big number goes up and dopamine hits” rather than “how do I communicate genuine information to people and have real interactions”. Twitter was a hellscape and bluesky, not much better (at least bsky didn’t try to promote you know what). Along with that, I didn’t feel comfortable with the idea of every word I say, every script I make, every meme post I give out would be fed into some artificial “intelligence” machine. Yes AI, has its uses, like training doctors and making crippled people walk once more, but I don’t need it to do all my coding and art for me, even if I suck absolute cheeks at them  . So I decided to switch gears and make forum accounts instead, currently on NG and here. I want to create without having a constant need to poison everything I make. I want to express, not limited by a small block of words. I want to live once again, having that same excitement for the internet as I did before :ugeek: .

So, what do you do?
While the only thing I have to show for my supposed programming skills is a barely decorated website on the neocities project, I know a bit of everything, choosing to specialise in multi purpose languages (python), art generative languages (HTML shipped with CSS and minimal JS, when I learn it) and low level (C/C++). I aspire to strike a balance between working a decent job and programming games for fun, whether it be a horror game for modern PCs or a short, sweet story on a fantasy console or an earthbound rom hack :P .

When I’m not losing all hope trying to code in C++ and python, you can usually catch me playing rhythm games, bullet hell and story driven games. Maybe an older game here and there. These days, I usually play Stepmania on pad and occasion, Unnamed Sound Voltex Clone and osu! (all either open source or coming to be). I’m currently also trying to beat Touhou 6 and 7, with my record stages being 5 and 3 respectively (5 and 2 if you only count stages I’ve beaten, not reached) and have recently beaten FreeDoom Phase 2 on GZDoom. For games I especially love, I try to create levels and simfiles for them (although, not a single one is either finished or has left my hard drive, which is honestly disappointing of me). Right now, I’m working on beating portal and Mirror’s Edge. I’m also rushing to finish something before the end of valentines (might fail anyway haha)

Listening to music from many amazing musicians, ranging from more laid back jazz from Casiopea to Song That Plays When You Are About To Dislocate Both Hands In A Rhythm Game type beats from Kobaryo (speedcore is actually so cool, when you get through the mess of tracks) inspired me to make my own tracks. My DAWs of choice are LMMS and OpenMPT, but choose what works for you! The kind of music I plan on making is just whatever comes to my head, honestly, which is right now old-school Happy Hardcore, breakcore, harsh noise and OpenMPT “chiptune”. Like my gaming projects, nothing has been released just yet, but here’s hoping by the end of spring I have something!

As I mentioned earlier, even though I’m bad at it, I’m taking up drawing as a skill. I don’t wish to use AI generated images, even if everyone else is. I prefer the feeling of making something with your own hands.

Until there’s a safe way to transfer money anonymously, for now, I won’t accept donations or commissions, and likely won’t for the foreseeable future (since none of what I do is worth it anyway lol)

that’s me. If you were to give me any longer I shall take up this page! I’ll continue if requested

ps: you are very cool.

ps: hardcore tano*c, if you see this, please bring back WACCA.

Hiya chaps, I found the link to this forum (which I'm very happy I found, actually) after watching Anthony's most recent video, and... yeah.

I go by December online (gotta love fictional characters specifically made to take on as a fake identity on the Internet), I'm a Catholic English-Italian and currently taking a gap year studying Spirituality (yeah, bit of a funny one) in Italy. Once this year is over I'll be studying for a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, before hopefully getting into website creation and design (that's yet to be seen).

In terms of what I like to do in my spare time, it's usually doodling, listening to music, and maybe a little reading, although I've been looking to increase my reading time as of late. I also like to play videogames: some casual, some more intense and/or story-driven... it depends what mood I'm in and what device I'm using e.g. most of my casual games are 3DS cartridges, DS more for adventure/puzzle-solving, Steam for more intense experiences...

Oh, and I like tactile things, hence part of the reason why I own a 3DS and DS in the first place. I like popping cartridges in and out with the springy motions they go through, I like pressing buttons and sliding sliders, I like occasionally pressing a touch screen with something other than just my finger, I like flipping things, I like twisty-turny knobs (like the ones in the family "I just passed my driving test so I'll stick with this until car insurance and road tax is cheaper for me once the government thinks I'm responsible enough on the road" car back in England): essentially anything but a touchscreen is cool for me. I'll admit that having a wide variety of bits and bobs that either mostly or exclusively use buttons has made the glass pane of my smartphone more bearable, but it's still not optimal for me. Not to mention these things are getting quite thin, so whenever I had to take it out of its case to either put in/take out a SIM card or get a chunky AUX cable to fit into the headphone jack I was worried it would just snap or something.

I'd say my social media usage has been getting better now that I've started to make it more difficult for myself to access it, or at least less convenient, but it's still a work-in-progress. As of now I'm trying to limit my access to Reddit and X to whenever I get notifications - and only what I get notifications for, e.g. news outlets I like to keep up with, dad jokes or my daily dose of fan-made Thomas the Tank Engine models. When it comes to YouTube I'm trialling simply not having the base youtube.com domain in my browser's auto-fill, and by proxy being more intentional with what I watch: after all, YouTube is a great resource of information, music and tutorials when used wisely.

...I think that's pretty much it, really. I've rambled enough. Anyways, have a nice day, and I hope to see what the community here does together

Hello everyone! I'm a 20 year old electrical engineering student from the United States! I found Reject Convenience through searching for videos about dumbphones, and now I'm here. Sorry if this post is a bit ranty or weird, I'm not the best writer.

I don't have my dumbphone yet (haven't made up my mind yet, did I mention I have ADHD ). I grew up with social media, and it messed me up. Judging my self-worth based on how many likes a post got was terrible for my mental health. I don't use social media anymore, unless you count YouTube, Twitch, and Discord as social media (which I don't). My parents encouraged me to quit, and I am happy I did. My dad uses no social media at all, and my mom likes to argue with people on reddit about fantasy books.

I LOVE technology. I'm going to school to design it! I listen to music and podcasts exclusively through my iPod Video, and my iPhone 13 mini is heavily locked-down so it acts as a slightly smart dumbphone. I collect CDs. (My favorite genres are breakcore and jungle!) I use Linux (Arch btw). I love beat saber! I'm learning Python and C (both in school and on my own).

I don't love big tech. I feel like they're taking advantage of a lot of people, and they are pushing technology in the wrong direction. GenAI is being used to replace creative jobs, make the internet unsearchable (and more isolating!!!), and spread disinformation at a breakneck pace. Everything is a subscription now. Even the things you can 'buy' are only licensed to you and can be revoked without warning. So many tech products are not repairable, by design. I could keep going.

I'm not sure how much I'm doing by rejecting big tech beyond helping my own mental health. I hope my decision makes a good example for my younger siblings and cousins. I don't want them to make the same mistakes I made online. :D I'm just happy to be here.!!

Hi friends and foes!

My New Year's Resolution this year was to live a more tactile life, by that I mean to do less things through smart technology designed to do everything and more things through dumber dedicated equipment.

I got a wall calendar and started journalling again, I got a record player also and I'm thinking of buying a handheld camera. So I'm here on the forum to talk about my experiences with that and to also move my social media to my desktop!

I like to read, mostly non-fiction, I'm interested in Religious Studies and I code but that's for work stuff I'm not a hobbyist or anything.

Can't wait to meet you all :)

Hi there. It's been a long time since I used an actual forum.

I'm Zach. I've been wanting to get rid of my smartphone for a while now, but had all kinds of excuses. I know for a fact I am addicted. In fact, I've been prettymuch addicted to computers since I was a kid, for better or for worse. I remember in 2003 as an 8 year old I used to daydream about having a device where I could be connected to the internet all the time. Now I'm looking to be disconnected more.

I had the same excuse for selling my car a few years ago. I live in a big city but people generally still prefer to drive here. I remember having all kinds of excuses about transit timing, my work situation, etc until someone at work who doesn't drive finally said "why don't you just try it for a week and see how it goes?"

It turns out, it was great. It is less convenient, but I was way less stressed all the time. I wasn't driving in traffic, and I actually got some walking in every day. It took about 45 minutes to get to work compared to 30 by driving. It was really, really hard to justify paying thousands of dollars to save 30 minutes a day. It's not even 30 minutes saved anyways, since I am able to catch up with people and actually enjoy my time on the bus.

Same thing happened with switching to Linux. I made all kind of excuses until I decided to just give it a shot, and it turned out I loved it.

Now I'm hoping to do the same thing with my smartphone. It's a way bigger problem than those other 2 things and I genuinely believe it's turning me into a worse person. I deal with security incidents at work, so I made the case that I should have a work phone for cybersec reasons and got approved, haha. I'm going to need that for MFA and email and all that stuff. Maybe GPS too. But...once I have that, I'm saying goodbye to my iPhone. At this point I've learned that life is a lot better when you reject the American idea that everything has to be as personalized and convenient as possible.

Anyways, I'm glad this forum exists. Thank you Reject Convenience for giving a voice to our concerns. These past few years of taking control of my life and health have been great.
