RSS Readers?

Post by onelius »

Since the forum has an RSS feed, I thought I'd ask if anyone has RSS reader recommendations!

I'm still figuring out how to use RSS feeds effectively, and I downloaded Fluent Reader a while back to test one out (mostly for newsletters) and it's worked fine, but I haven't looked into alternatives much. I've looked into building one myself as a fun project as well but that's gonna take a while...

I am very much in the market for one for Linux. On macOS I've used NetNewsWire. It's fine, pretty simple, but since I'm transitioning away from macOS, I want to find something new!

For Linux there is NewsFlash and RSS Guard which also allow syncing with some services for example Nextcloud News, which I use to Sync it across my devices.

I just use Evolution, which is also my mail client. The RSS setup is a bit jankety (like the rest of its config menus) but it works.

I've been using Thunderbird's for some time now. It's really simple to setup and organize but I don't think it would be worth it if I wasn't also using it as an email client. I just like it better not having a whole entire app for every little thing (in some cases).

I've also been considering trying a terminal reader like Newsboat just because it looks fun but idk.

I am currently living in kde land and use mostly kde programs. So I am trying Akregator, but I am sure there might be something better. I just like my applications to use the same theming.

I use akgregator and gPodder! Akgregator is maintained by KDE, and it is designed for the plasma desktop environment. I'm not sure if it has a Windows port, but I really like it. It's how I get my youtube subscriptions and tech news, since there's no algorithm. I use gPodder to fetch and sync podcasts to my iPod Video, I'm not sure who maintains it, but it is a great piece of software for anyone still rocking an iPod.

I also use gPodder, but theNextcloud Implementation of the API and sync it to AntennaPod. Its a great system.

With Akgregator I have little experience. But I use RSSGuard a lot nowadays. It also uses KDE/QT, so it syncs with the KDE Theme and has many Integrations into a lot of RSS Aggregators like FreshRSS or Nextcloud News. My Favorite Feature I discovered Recently, after trying to Reduce my YouTube Consumption, is that it includes MPV the Video Player which also can play Videos from YouTube links. So I can Directly watch YT Videos in my RSS Player without ever entering the Website. Not even giving the Algorithm the Chance to catch me.

No idea I could do that... oooh. I really need to start self-hosting sooner rather than later.
