Google Maps Alternatives?

Post by bubbafinches »

Heyo! lmk if this post should be in another place here on the forum- im still new to participating in forum environments!!

One of the few daily contributors that I'm trying to weed out from Google is Google Maps (and/or Apple Maps). Does anyone here use any alternatives, and what do you like/dislike about it? How was the adjustment, especially if you've been using it for a long time?
I've started using Magic Earth- nothing too bad, just sometimes it doesnt label my exits clearly and then i miss an exit or something. I try and not use it if im running somewhere late and NEED to get there on time, and haven't used it to navigate to that destination before lol. Other than that, Magic Earth has done the job that I need it to! I've also mentally played around with the idea of doing something similar to the old mapquest days, and printing out or writing out map instructions before leaving the house. Apparently there's an app too for MapQuest, but I haven't tried it yet!
Would love to hear others' thoughts on this subject!

Something I have been using for Navigation, is OSMand+ and Organic Maps. Both Projects rely on Open Street Maps (fun fact Apple Maps also relies on OSM) and offer good Navigation. OSMand+ offer a bit more Power and Features where Organic Maps is a bit more Straight Forward to use.

One place tho where Booth apps lack, where the OSM ecosystem in general lacks, is to tell me opening / closing times of stores. Those Places that they do often have small Inaccuracies.

But that can be remedied by Contributing via Street Complete

I have used Organic Street maps as well, but I have moved onto HERE maps. It has some features that I really like, for example; setting the max speed you drive for more accurate eta estimations, changing your car fuel type from petrol to electric. Overall, it is a really polished application that I recommend as well.

MapQuest still exists and offers turn by turn navigation! It also has settings for walking, biking, or driving, and a lot of the same filters as Google Maps (avoid highways, avoid toll roads, etc).

I use MapQuest when I really need turn by turn navigation or estimated distances in an unfamiliar place (like "can I walk to the hotel from the train station?"). Otherwise I use OrganicMaps a lot. I just learned about OsmAnd from reading the posts here, but I'll check that out next.
