The fun new world of surveillance pricing

Cara Nicole just made a fantastic video on the topic. I am surprised I had no idea this was a thing, but all these privacy policies are starting to make a lot more sense...

This reel is weakened by so many concessions to disturbing practises, eg asserting that facial recognition software is legitimate to ‘detect shoplifters’ or offer targeted discounts, until the cat is let out of the bag about 7′50″. I will not turn this post into a political discussion, but it suffices to say that this leaves a rather lukewarm taste in my mouth.
On surveillance pricing in general, I recall CGP Grey mentioning this practise in two casual asides (19″ and 1′1″) in 2017. How is it that knowledge of these practises is so slow to spread? This is not the only case; I recall Echelon appearing in children’s books in 2008, well before Snowden.
