I use arch, btw

Talk about Linux, macOS, Windows, maybe TempleOS?

(Before anyone roasts me: Yes, I've done the whole vanilla arch from scratch thing, a good ten-ish years ago. I did it once, it was educational, I had a blast, I discovered Openbox that way out of necessity, I used it until that machine physically broke down and wouldn't turn on anymore, and I've never felt the need to do it again since.)
I, too, have done the install arch from scratch and I will not be doing it again. It was very educational, but I don't got time for that lol. I haven't heard of archcraft, I will have to check it out.

Lately I've been using regular Debian, it works really well on low spec machines and I love using it in servers. Recently I've been working with offline maps, tiles and directions API's to self host country-wide maps with navigation and directions, and oh man is it RAM/CPU intensive.

Every MB of RAM and CPU performance that I can get out of that machine is welcome.

This is why I love Linux + Blender. Windows takes up so much unnecessary RAM, so I get a lot more headroom just by using Blender with Linux. 4-5GB is a LOT when you're working with them pesky polygons!

Okay Garuda has wobbly windows on by default, so I have switched and will be trying it out for a couple weeks. I love wobbly windows.

I wish linux had all the cool window effects still like windows burning up when closing, and the wobbly stuff. Fun times.

Im new to this forum so I am just looking through some of the posts here!

And I am also new to linux, this summer i tried reviving my mom's old laptop with different linux distros that I had atleast already heard about, first Ubuntu which I liked and then Mint that i liked less, ( not that i got a lot of time with either of them because that laptop had serious hardware issues and we ended up throwing it away in the end, it would just not boot until i reinstalled a new linux on it and then it would do it again, and again, etc.)

Skip to a little bit later, my boyfriend got a steamdeck, and thats when i learned it runs on linux, i already wanted a gaming laptop because during winter running my desktop computer racked up a lot of costs and im also more of a portable person in general, so i got one too, and now its somehow my main computer, so from what i understood i runs some version of arch? Im learning so much things and the amount of customizing and freedom it has brings me back to when id just click on all settings to find what they did on Windows xp or 7 growing up!

This was super long winded way of saying i guess my favourite is steamOS version of arch for now because i have very little experience but its so fun to learn about it

Firstly, welcome to the forum, @Softlywool!!! I haven't looked into this at all, but I really want to try SteamOS as a desktop client. I really love what Valve has done for Linux in the past couple of years, and I support the heck out of it. Learning Linux can be really fun (and also really really scary), if you have questions, feel free to ask around here! I'm not a fan of the "scoff you can just google that, noob" because that sucks. Anyways, glad to hear you're having fun poking around Linux, and I hope it continues to be fun!

Something I just got SUPER into was ProxMox - making VMs on the fly is so much fun, and now I have a Windows VM that does GPU passthrough, which is AWESOME. I only use that for Big Gaming (which is rare for me), and then I use a PopOS VM for all my Blender rendering for my videos!

Thank you so much for the welcome @rejectconvenience !
And yes truly, it can be really scary, especially like you said you try to find an answer to something and people just say things like ''if you dont understand THAT then you wont understand anything at all'', without even pointing at the right direction to start, so I really appreciate that you say that about asking about things. Absolutely yes good on Valve! They also really made it easy to play games on linux, I saw many who said they had to tinker a lot with their games to get them to work but honestly its not all that different from tinkering with making things work on windows as well ( or VM's ).

I've used Fedora for almost my entire time with Linux (about 2 years). It works great and I highly recommend giving it a try!

For about a year I've been using Fedora Kinoite, which is the atomic version of Fedora KDE. It's been nice to have a chromebook-like experience from my Linux desktop and not have to worry about an update messing something up, which has happened in the past. I'm very into the whole cloud native world that the atomic desktops are opening up, so I finally made the switch to Aurora, a custom image of Kinoite by the Universal Blue project.

I saw Garuda being mentioned in this thread, so I will also mention Bazzite! It's another custom image but specifically geared toward gaming and very much started as a SteamOS clone. If you're looking for something similar with a few more bells and whistles, I recommend checking it out. They make it a point to bake in as much as you would need to have success with gaming on Linux.

But use what works for you! Linux has never been as open as this for new people to give it a try. :)
