One week using Linux

I guess it's been slightly less than a week but it feels like it's really growing on me. I switched from Windows to Kubuntu as I really like the KDE Plasma desktop environment and Ubuntu tends to "just work," I realize some people don't like Canonical or their practices but it seems they have to a degree been stripped from Kubuntu, leaving just the base OS. Honestly it seemed a lot more daunting at first but most stuff I use just works. Steam and Itch use Proton or WINE, I actually configured it so that double clicking an EXE just runs it with WINE as well, OBS worked instantly which also shocked me as I've struggled with it in the past. I have had a few problems though, mainly in Discord and Davinci Resolve. Discord has been weird as while it's mostly fine, it doesn't let me screenshare, so I ended up just installing the Vesktop client which worked, and lets me use my custom cursor! (It seems x11 apps don't like my cursor and change it to a default one.) Davinci's been the only other real problem with it giving me an "out of gpu memory" error when I try to view the timeline, but I didn't erase my Windows install so if worst comes to worst I can still edit over there. I will be getting a more powerful actual computer in the future tho, so my laptop won't be my permanent machine for too long. I weirdly was having some sort of very mild "withdrawal" from Windows, not even due to inconvenience or anything, but just because it felt different, but this desktop has really started to grow on me already as I install more stuff and do more with it. I'm also genuinely really happy with the way it just works with all my hardware, I didn't need to install any extra software to get my wacom tablet to work or my mouse with its weird side-scrolly thing. Anyway, what are your thoughts on Linux, as someone who's switched, thought of it, or even never really considered it before? I have used it before, but until recently only really on super old laptops and a raspberry pi before I had a good laptop of my own.

In regards to Resolve, what version are you using? Is it the free version or do you have a license? I feel like I had the same issues while I was using it, but a friend of mine let me barrow a license to see if that was it, and it was.

I've since switched all my editing to Blender, which is shockingly good. It's a little strange at first, but I encourage you try it out. It's surprisingly intuitive (though, I've used Blender for like a decade at this point, so who knows what my opinion means anymore lol). I love how customizable it is - I like the timeline being on the left side and the preview window on the right, with files underneath that - I stack a lot of stuff, so it's easier to navigate like that.

Don't worry about the Ubuntu Drama, people especially in the Linux/FOSS World, love to overexaggerate when it comes to such things.

With Davinci there could be a GPU Driver issue when you are using NVIDIA when you are using the Paid version.
As far as I know is that the Free Version doesn't work because It doesn't ship with its own Video/Audio En-/Decoders and won't work with the Linux Native ones. Some Licensing Issues. There are also besides Blender options like Openshot and Kdenlive but I did hear mixed Reviews from those.

And Regarding Discord, it has always been an Issue as it still uses an Old Version of Electron, which doesn't have support for the Screen Recording APIs from Wayland. That's why there are so many Electron Wrappers for Discord that support screen sharing.
If worse comes to worst, there exists the XWayland-Video-Bridge Project from KDE which allows X11 Apps to screen record Wayland Applications. Isnt the best, but it is something. Hope this Helps .

Hope you enjoy experience on Linux as I did. As once, you get into it, you really get to feel how customizable Linux gets even beyond KDE and how it molds around your Unique Workflow that you feel comfortable in.

To be fair with the Ubuntu drama, their package security is lacking for those snap packages. If it was better managed, I would agree with you more that the drama is overexaggerated, but when several apps published to the snap store have stolen people's crypto without canonical doing anything to correct the problem, then I get upset. Whether you think crypto is stupid or not, this is certainly unacceptable and puts into question if other applications on the snap store are safe. While flatpak, app images, or distro builds of packages also rely on trust, they are at least not usually hiding what they are doing behind proprietary software while saying that proprietary software is secure.

To the OP, I am really glad to see someone enjoying the Linux experience. Discord is such an annoying can of worms on Linux. I have tried so many discord apps and I have disappointed by all the options in one way or another. KDE though is an awesome DE to use. While it might be not advisable right now, distro hopping can be a fun hobby when you get more use to the way Linux works. While almost all the distros work very similar, they all have their own flavor on how the user experience should go. I think my distro hopping days gave me a more complete picture on what I want in my Linux experience, so now I am more settled than when I was younger. Have fun.

@Stefen_Maxwell You are right, the Crypto debacle was just stupid, they should never have allowed Apps to appear in the Store without Human Review, and on top the Safe check mark thing was just bad design. But Canonical has taken steps in prevent such Problems to reacure (Actually putting a Person in front of the review).

With my Ubuntu Drama statement, I was more referring to the Problems that People have with Opt Out Telemetry and they're changing to a more Snap heavy Ecosystem and refusal of Flatpaks. While I personally also don't like Snaps and can live without them. I can also see that the Ubuntu Distro with or without Snaps, provides a Stable, Up to date (not LTS) and Secure systems designed to be Usable. Which many other Distros just cannot provide in the same way. Also the sheer amount of Guids and first Party software create for Ubuntu is also a big plus.
